An unusual venue for Ambedkar’s birth anniversary celebrations

It was a chance for several families who live under the poverty line to get a glimpse of a glittering star hotel on Monday, as members of the Dalit Samaraksha Samiti held a day-long seminar in the city.

The seminar, which was to observe the 124 birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar, was on the theme ‘Ambedkar’s Contribution to Modern India’.

Inspiring families

“Around ninety percent of those who attended today had not seen such a hotel in their lives. Several of them live below the poverty line. This day will give them the inspiration to ensure that their children study and become successful,” said K.V. Balakrishna, State president of the samiti.

Speaking on the different choice of venue, Mr. Balakrishna said, “They usually expect Dalit functions to be held outside a tent in Town Hall or other such venues. Today, even places like Town Hall costs lakhs to book.

“We got a very good deal here and all the leaders of the group contributed to book the hotel. Why can’t we have a function in a place like this?” he said.
