On Saturday evening a 25-year-old woman set herself ablaze over alleged dowry harassment in DJ Halli.

The victim, Shabeena has been married to Irfan, an autorikshaw driver, for the past six years and the couple have two children.

Enquiries revealed that Irfan, an alcoholic, harassed Shabeena for dowry. Shabeena’s parents had bought an autorickshaw for him but Irfan harassed Shabeena for more money to spend on alcohol.

According to police, on Friday, the couple again fought over this and Shabeena set herself on fire on Saturday. She was rushed to Victoria Hospital but could not survive.

The DJ Halli police have detained Irfan for questioning.
