A 20-year-old newly-wed woman committed suicide at her residence at Laggere on Sunday morning.

Bhagya, who was married to Govind for the past ten months, allegedly killed herself due to “harassment for dowry from her in-laws and husband”, said her parents in a complaint with the Rajagopalnagar police.

The complaint claims that Bhagya had slipped into depression after the harassment intensified.

According to the police, Bhagya hanged herself from the ceiling of the room after her husband – an autorickshaw driver – left for work and her in-laws had gone out for market.

A neighbour who had come to meet Bhagya found her hanging from the ceiling around 8 a.m. No suicide note was found.

“Based on a complaint filed by victim’s parents, we have registered a death due to dowry harassment case (section 304B of the IPC). We have detained the in-laws and are questioning them," said an investigating officer.
