An alert citizen helped the Girinagar police nab a 61-year-old woman involved in old currency exchange racket.

The accused, Krishna Kumari, a resident of Malleshwaram, was overheard by the citizen while talking on the phone about the cash in her possession and the place to deliver it. The citizen immediately alerted the police, which rushed to the spot and detained the woman. The police also recovered ₹ 26,54,500 in old 500 and 1000 denominations.

Enquiries revealed that the accused would collect cash from her friends and relatives and get it exchanged for a commission. She would handover the cash to her contact Chandramma in Girinagar, who is now on the run.

Police suspect that Krishna Kumari has been involved in the racket since demonetisation and has exchanged currency before. The police are on the lookout for Chandramma.
