Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra on Thursday said he would consider the suggestion for slapping penalty on the “builders and developers” who are responsible for unauthorised constructions and layouts under the year-long Akrama-Sakrama scheme of regularisation of unauthorised constructions in the urban areas beginning from March 23.

The minister said this at a press conference when his comments were sought on the views by various associations who had wondered whether it was proper to levy penalty only on the present owners under the regularisation scheme as they had just bought such unauthorised properties from either builders or developers of layouts.

Admitting that such a view was worth debating, the minister said he would examine the files concerned immediately and take a decision by Friday itself on whether builders and developers should also be brought under the penalty clause.

Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake had, on Tuesday, announced the Akrama-Sakrama scheme that seeks to regularise 50 and 25 per cent of violations in residential and commercial structures respectively by collecting penalty.
