The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidates will have to contest the elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council without the party’s official symbol of “two leaves”.

The AIADMK’s Karnataka unit, which had moved the High Court of Karnataka for allotment of the “two leaves” symbol for its candidates contesting in the BBMP elections, withdrew the plea after the court indicated that its plea cannot be considered at this stage as the election process had commenced.

The State Election Commission (SEC) had declined the party’s representation for allotment of this symbol for the reason that the AIADMK was only a registered and not a recognised political party in Karnataka .

Meanwhile, Justice Ravi Malimath, before whom the petition came up for hearing on Wednesday, ordered issue of notice to the SEC and other authorities on the party’s plea for allotment of its official symbol in Karnataka for future elections.

The AIADMK is both a registered and recognised political party in Tamil Nadu.
