As lakhs of students, who wrote the II Pre-University final exams, anxiously await results to get a clearer idea on their options in terms of courses to apply for, a section of them appear to have already sealed the deal.

Some colleges have completed admissions to undergraduate general education courses even before the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) has announced the date of results.

The application process for these colleges began as early as last yearend. This is even when the Karnataka Education Act clearly specifies that the admission season officially begins in April, when the head of the education institution displays the calendar of events.

The rules also stipulate that the selections have to be made “taking into consideration the marks secured by the student in the qualifying examination.”

This is clearly honoured in breach by some well-known colleges in the city. One deemed-to-be university has already admitted students to most of its courses. One student, on condition of anonymity, said she was asked to bring her class 10 marks card during the interview after applying. “They did not even ask for my class 11 grades. Now that I already have a seat, I don’t really care about the II PU results,” she said matter-of-factly.

But there is a catch: her original class 10 marks card is with the college. “I had planned to apply to another reputed college in Mumbai, which begins admissions in June. But by the time their process starts, classes will begin here and I will no longer have access to my original certificate,” the student admitted.

A student, who was admitted under similar circumstances, is now in her first year of B.A. “Even my last exam was not over when I got the seat. I did not put in too much effort into the exam and managed to pass as it did not matter how well I scored anyway,” she recalled.

But students who were unaware of these early admissions are at a loss.

Manish (name changed) has been knocked out of the race in at least two colleges. “I now have to look at lesser-known colleges if I want a seat,” said the dejected BBA seat aspirant.

When admissions come to our approval, we will cross-check. They may not have followed the merit order. How are admissions possible without results? We can cancel affiliation or convert a permanent affiliation into a temporary one if we receive a complaint
