Four days after the murder of a six-year-old girl, a special team of police officers tracked the accused to his home town in Shahpur, Yadgir district, Monday. He was detained and was being brought back to the city.
The accused, Anil, who worked in a stone-crushing unit at Veerabhadranagar was living in a rented house along with his wife and their eight-year-old daughter.
According to the police, the girl was visiting her grandfather Puttaswamy for summer vacation and used to play with the Anil’s daughter as the family lived nearby.
A few days ago, Anil’s wife and daughter left for their home town.
The girl did not know this, and on April 20, while her grandfather, who is vegetable vendor, was out on work, she went to met her friend. The police said they had evidence to prove that Anil used the opportunity to murder her and conceal the crime.
Meanwhile, Puttaswamy returned from work and realised that his granddaughter was missing. After hours of search, he filed a missing complaint with the police. “Fearing that he would be caught, Anil locked the house and escaped to his native place in Yadgir,” a police officer said.
The neighbours who had joined the search operation on Sunday alerted the police after a foul smell started emanating from Anil’s house. The police broke open the door and found the decomposed body of the girl in a cardboard box.
