‘He will be remembered for his contribution to the welfare of backward classes'

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the death of S. Bangarappa, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, and said he would be remembered for his commitment and contribution to the welfare of the backward classes.

In a message sent to Mr. Bangarappa's wife Shakuntala on Monday, Dr. Singh said Mr. Bangarappa was a widely respected leader who worked selflessly for the welfare of the people and the development of the State.

Mr. Bangarappa entered politics as a Congress member of the Assembly in 1967 and impressed all by his hard work.

He became a Minister in the State in 1977 and later Chief Minister in 1990.
