A school cries for attention

November 26, 2015 04:46 pm | Updated 04:46 pm IST - Tumakuru

The Government Adarsha school students along with their parents staged a protest in front of the office of the Block Education Officer, demanding teachers, toilets, drinking water and other basic amenities for the school in Pavagada of Tumakuru district on Thursday.

The agitators alleged that despite several appeals made to the BEO, Assitant Commissioner, and Deputy Commissioner, the problems have not been addressed.

The school, started in 2010, has 390 students and 50 per cent of them are girls. The children study from 6th to 10th standard in English medium. A parent, M. Paramesh, alleged that the girls are suffering as they do not have toilets in the school and even the school building leaks during the rainy season.

Ravi, chairman of SDMC (School Development and Monitoring Committee) of the school, said that only five teachers are working and at least eight more are required. Though the issue has been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned, they have not taken any remedial measures as they want to help private educational institutions by closing the Adarsha school, he alleged. He further alleged that the officials concerned have joined hands with the private educational institutions and want the children to take a Transfer Certificate and leave the school so that the school is closed.

The agitators also gheraoed the BEO, B.P. Nagarajaiah, demanding that he address the problems. They said they would stage a dharna on November 30 if the authorities fail to act by then.
