A chance at a degree, one more time

May 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - BENGALURU:

That long-awaited degree certificate, that many had lost hope of ever having, is within reach again. Buoyed by the huge response to its earlier offer, Bangalore University (BU) has decided to give its alumni, who had not cleared their exams, one more chance at writing the exams and earning a degree.

The academic council, on Thursday, approved extending its ‘golden jubilee’ offer to all its alumni – from 1964 to 2008 – to attempt exams one more time. Open to all courses except medical sciences – undergraduate and postgraduate – the extended offer does not even require candidates to have cleared 50 per cent of the papers, a condition that applied to those who wrote the exam this March. In fact, even those who appeared for the first exam can attempt the second one.

“Valuation of the exam held in March is going on. We will announce the results in another 20 days. But many of those who took the exam requested another chance. There were many others who had missed the first opportunity and wanted another one,” said BU Registrar (Evaluation) Ningegowda K.N.

As many as 1,864 candidates, many of them women in their 50s and 60s, had appeared for the first exam. A notification for the second exam will be announced soon.

Other decisions

Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda announced that the results of the 229 students of BNM Degree College, Banashankari, will be announced. The college principal had been caught sneaking out answer scripts post-exams to facilitate some students to make corrections and additions. Results of eight students, whose involvement is suspected, will be withheld. A tourism course with multiple exit options was discussed and cleared by the council, which also gave its nod to penalising evaluators who don’t show up by not paying them and withholding the results of the students of those colleges.
