A 46-year-old man was killed and the pillion rider injured after a speeding school bus knocked them down at Srinagar on Monday morning. Around eight school children were in the bus when the incident occurred.

Around 7.45 a.m., Krishna (46), who works as a watchman in a college, and his neighbour, Byramma, a helper in a neighbouring school, were travelling in his motorcycle when the bus crashed into them at a T-junction near Kalidas Bus Stand in Srinagar. Krishna suffered severe head injuries and was declared dead when he was taken to a hospital, while Byramma is recuperating in the hospital, said the Basavanagudi Traffic Police, who have registered a case.

The private bus was on its usual pick-up route and had picked up eight children who study in Poornaprajna School nearby. The children were safe and were shifted to an alternative bus, said a senior police official.

Police said Mohan, the driver of the bus, was speeding on the road and did not slow down at the junction. The driver has been arrested.

Boy succumbs to injuries

Meanwhile, a five-year-old child who had been run over while he was playing in front of his home at Nayanadahalli succumbed to his injuries late on Sunday night.

On February 4, Puneet - the son of Rukmini and Shivaraj, both daily-wage labourers who had migrated from Raichur - was playing in front of his small shed when a speeding car knocked him down. He suffered major injuries and was in a critical state at a nearby hospital. Byatarayanapura Police have registered a culpable homicide case against the driver of the vehicle, Harish Kumar, and secured judicial custody for 10 days.
