Bengaluru: The police are searching for two more men allegedly involved in the molestation of a woman at Kammanahalli on the night of December 31.

Four men, who were allegedly stalking the woman for five days before the attack, have already been arrested. The police said that they had found out where she lives and followed her whenever she stepped out of the house.

The arrest comes three days after CCTV footage showed two men on a two-wheeler accosting the woman, zooming past her, taking a U-turn, and halting the vehicle. The rider and prime suspect Ayappa got off, grabbed her, molested her and dragged her to the scooter.

The woman and her friend had stepped out of an autorickshaw. While her friend walked towards the house, the woman stayed behind to pay the driver. Just as the friend reached the house, she realised that the victim was not with her. When she looked back, she saw her being attacked and started screaming for help. This prompted the attackers to push the victim, who fell down, and flee, said a senior police officer.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Police Commissioner Praveen Sood said, “When we saw the video, I felt that I didn’t have to talk to the victim at all. It was a clear case of molestation and groping, based on which an FIR was registered before a special team was formed to crack the case.”

How they were caught

The local crime intelligence team went around the area gathering information about groups of youth who were roaming the streets on New Year’s eve.

They examined CCTV footage from around the area. However, it was old fashioned detective work that helped them zero in on one of the suspects who stays in the same area.

When they picked him up for questioning, he not only confessed but also gave details of his associates, said a senior police officer.

“Apart from his confession, we have strong evidence to prove their involvement,” said Mr. Sood.
