After a series of public consultation meetings over the proposed revision of Master Plan 2031, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has rectified its projections of solid waste that will be generated in the city.
When the BDA recently put out the 35-page document that studied projected scenarios for Bengaluru for 2031, it had come under severe criticism for assuming that solid waste generated today stands at 6,331 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) and extrapolating it to 18,390 TPD by 2031. The figures were not accurate.
BDA Commissioner Rajkumar Khatri, while speaking at a consultation meet organised by the Karnataka chapter of Indian Institute of Architects here on Saturday, said the scenarios have been corrected. BDA has now estimated that the city will generate garbage of 13,208 TPD by 2031, over 5,000 TPD less than its earlier estimate. It calculated the revised figures on the premise that Bengaluru currently generates 5,600 TPD of waste, of which the BBMP area produces 5,200 TPD and the surrounding villages contribute another 400 TPD.
However, these estimates, too, are on the higher side. The civic body’s data shows that the areas which come under its purview produces around 4,000 TPD and not 5,200 TPD.
Dr. Khatri said the authority has now included a natural disaster management plan. Consultants with help from Karnataka State Disaster Management Monitoring Cell, have mapped the network of drains, and catchment areas of lakes, drains and flood-prone areas in the city. They have also mapped water flow gradients to device a strategy for urban floods.
