Following molestation cases, 500 CCTV cameras to be installed in city

Days after his statement on the mass molestation in the city during New Year celebration created outrage, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Thursday said 550 CCTV cameras would be installed in sensitive areas of the city to prevent crime.

Speaking to the press, he said these cameras will be installed in city at a cost of Rs. 39 crore in two months. There are plans to install 5000 camera across the city in the coming months, he added.

Mr. Parameshwara also said women force in the police would be increased from 5 per cent to 20 per cent in the coming days.

On the Kammanahalli molestation case, he said police were looking into CCTV footages and that City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood would brief the media at 4 p.m. Thursday evening.

Stating that Bengaluru was safe for women and children, Mr. Parameshwara said the government was committed to take all steps to ensure safety of women and all citizens of the city.

Meanwhile, Governor Vajubhai Vala has sought a report on the alleged molestation cases in the city. Mr. Paramsehwara said the government will submit its report to the Governor soon.

City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood said along with the CCTV cameras, the number of phone lines in the police control room will also be increased.
