The mounds of waste kept in the contentious waste processing plant at Somasundarapalya caught fire on Friday evening. According to the fire department, the incident occurred in the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant near HSR Layout around 7.30 p.m. A large pile of processed waste caught fire. Two fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the blaze.

For at least three years now, residents in the neighbourhood have been up in arms against the plant, which they say is unscientifically disposing waste, even by burning. Apart from that, they are also upset with the stink raised by the mounting pile of stored garbage as well as leachate leaking into the lake.
