A city-based non-governmental organisation - Meghshala Trust - has been awarded the National Contest on Social Innovation, 2016, for its contribution to the field of education.

The prize was given away by the Ministry of External Affairs and the NITI Aayog during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas held earlier this week. The objective of the contest was to identify social impact innovations that help address socio-economic problems in the country by offering commercially viable solutions.

A total of 20 awards were given for social innovation after they were short-listed. A total of 774 applications were received for the contest. Ullas Kumar, vice-president (Operations), Meghshala Trust, received the award by Union Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh.

Educational aids

The trust, founded by Jyoti Thyagarajan three years ago, has been working in 120 government schools and has had an impact on around 6000 students in Karnataka. The organisation makes audio and visual content such as films and designs modules which act as educational aids for teachers.
