Balancing reservoir to be built near Navile

February 09, 2017 12:28 am | Updated 12:29 am IST - Bengaluru:

To check the loss of over 32 tmcft of water, due to collection of silt at the Tungabhadra reservoir, the State government has decided to build a balancing reservoir near Navile, in the downstream of the Tungabhadra, Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil informed the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Replying to Congress member N.S. Boseraju, the Minister said that the construction of the reservoir near the dam has become inevitable as the State is not able to impound the requisite water in the reservoir, which resulted in a shortage in the flow of water in the canal networks in the Tungabhadra command area.

“A detailed project report is being prepared,” he said.

The cost of the proposed balancing reservoir will be around ₹500 crore and about 16,000 acres of land which is available in the proposed dam site has also been identified, he said.

The Minister also said that the government had taken up strengthening 27 major and medium sized dams in the State, including that of Krishnaraja Sagar (Cauvery), Alamatti (Krishna) and Narayanapur (Krishna) with World Bank assistance.
