The brazen daylight attack on Dasanapura APMC president Kadabagere Srinivas in February, when two bike-borne men shot at him and his driver, has revealed how gangsters dabbling in real estate have shifted their base to the outskirts of the city to avoid police surveillance. The shootout unfolded at Kogilu Cross signal in Yelahanka.
Though the city police rounded up some anti-social elements, forcing the others to flee the city, the incident has exposed lapses on part of the Organised Crime wing of the Central Crime Branch.
To date, the case has not been solved. Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Hemanth Nimbalkar, who is heading the investigation, had even led a raid in the homes of rowdy Syed Aman and former don Angi Sridhar.
Mr. Nimbalakar has also directed the jurisdictional police to summon the habitual offenders and rowdy elements to take stock of the situation in their jurisdiction. This exercise will not only keep troublemakers in check but will also help the police to gather intelligence, a senior police officer said.
Two years ago, a senior police officer of the CCB had prepared a dossier with details of the gangsters and their activities, and submitted it to the city police. The report, however, was shelved and the police officer transferred.
The Kogilu Cross incident has seen a revival of such monitoring activities, and this time the police are expanding their net to the outskirts. “If things are not kept in check, it could have a cascading effects on the law and order situation,” a police officer said.
