84 Scrabble enthusiasts to battle it out over four days

The 9th iGate International Scrabble Tournament will be held from January 17 to 20 on the iGATE corporate campus at Whitefield.

The tourney, which is being conducted by iGATE, in association with the Bangalore Scrabble Club, is the only one of its kind in the country and the fourth largest Scrabble tournament in the world.

An official release said that this year, the tournament will have 84 Scrabble enthusiasts from 17 countries vying for a total prize of $ 14,000.

Last year’s champion Nigel Richards will be back to try and retain his trophy.

Two divisions

There are two divisions: Premier and Intermediate, grouped according to world ratings, with 10 prizes in each division, ranging from Rs. 2.5 lakh (first prize in premier division) to Rs. 6,000 (10th prize).

All the participants will play a maximum of 35 games over four days.

Each game is for a duration of 50 minutes.

The tournament has been organised according to the rules and regulations of the World English Scrabble Players’ Association (WESPA).
