822 of 1,923 encroachments on storm water drains cleared, BBMP tells HC

1,101 to be removed, survey under way

As many as 822 of the 1,923 encroachments on major storm water drains (SWDs) across the city have been removed so far, the BBMP told the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday.

The counsel for the civic agency made a submission before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice Ravi Malimath during the hearing of a PIL petition complaining about encroachments of a lake and connecting SWDs.

The BBMP also told the court that a survey of SWDs is under way.

Meanwhile, as per the data submitted by the BBMP to the court, the East, West and South zones have no encroachments as of now. All the 391 identified encroachments – 347 in East, 13 in West and 31 in South – have been removed.

Of the remaining six zones, 619 of 769 encroachments are left to be removed in Mahadevapura zone. Yelahanka zone had a total 395 encroachments of which only 58 have been cleared so far. In Dasarahalli zone, 128 of 258 encroachments are yet to be removed.

Of the 75 encroachments in Bommanahalli and Rajarajeshwari Nagar zones, 75 have been cleared. Apart from these, the BBMP had identified 35 encroachments of Koramangala valley of which many have been removed.
