The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to be getting its act together, or so it may seem, as far as waste disposal is concerned. It was only recently that the High Court of Karnataka lambasted the civic body for presenting a rosy picture about garbage clearance.
According to a senior BBMP official, 410 trucks carrying 3,800 tonnes of waste were sent to the four landfills on the city’s outskirts — Terra Firma, Mandur, S. Bingipura and Lakshmipura. The backlog garbage has almost been cleared, the official said.
Meanwhile, the BBMP is going to file an affidavit that includes an action plan to resolve the garbage crisis, timeline, besides notices issued to bulk generators, in the High Court on Monday.
BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel recently directed the zonal commissioners to identify 20 major bulk generators in each zone and issue notices to them. Through the notice, the BBMP sought information about the arrangements made to dispose of waste, quantum that is generated and where it is being disposed of. The officials were directed to inspect the premises to ascertain if alternative arrangements had been made.
The BBMP was yet to receive any response from the bulk generators to whom notices have been served. It may be recalled that the BBMP, along with the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, had offered technical assistance to the bulk generators, besides holding three rounds of discussion with them.
