Less than a week after the sexual assault on a student on the Jnana Bharathi campus, three women, who work as waiters in a Gandhinagar restaurant, were abducted, sexually assaulted and perhaps raped by a gang of eight men near Bidadi early on Friday.

The crime took place between 12.30 a.m. and 3.30 a.m. after the women, all in their early 20s, were kidnapped by the gang in a van from their home in Mariyappanapalya near Bidadi.

Although Ramanagaram Superintendent of Police Anupam Agarwal confirmed the rape, the victims themselves denied it late on Friday evening, even though they acknowledged they were kidnapped.

Just back from work

The victims had just returned home from work along with five of their colleagues. They had rented the house just three weeks back, staying on the ground floor while a family of four was on the first floor.

The men first overpowered, beat up and blindfolded the two security guards deployed by the bar owner outside the house before ringing the bell.

When the unsuspecting women opened the door, the gang barged in, threatened them and robbed them of their valuables and cellphones before abducting three of the women, who hail from Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.

Another house nearby

Bidadi police said the men took the three to another house in the neighbourhood and gang-raped them. The victims were later blindfolded and driven towards Magadi Road where they were let off near Beggars’ Colony around 3.30 a.m.

The women, who managed to flag down an autorickshaw to reach home, called their employer who informed the police around 6 a.m.

The police said the victims informed them that the Kannada-speaking abductors were aged between 22 and 25. Ramanagaram Superintendent of Police Anupam Agarwal said the Bidadi police are investigating, based on a complaint filed by one of the security guards, Purushotham, and have registered a case of kidnap and rape.

The victims were subjected to medical tests at a private hospital on Mysore Road while the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
