Three engineering students were killed when the motorcycle by which they were travelling rammed a stationary Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) garbage truck in Hulimavu on Monday night.

Atul Kumar Sharma, (21), Vinay Kumar Thakur, (21) and Ansar, (20), all natives of Himachal Pradesh, were returning home when the accident occurred.

They were staying in the city for the past two years. None of them were wearing a helmet.

The police said that Ansar, who was riding the bike lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn and rammed the garbage truck parked on a side of Bannerghatta Road. Vinay Kumar was a student of Indian Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication in Ganganagar.

The Hulimavu Traffic police have registered a case. The truck was parked on the road side after its brakes failed and the drivers had not put out any sign to alert motorists, the police said.

While Atul Kumar and Ansar died on the spot, Vinay Kumar Thakur succumbed at NIMHANS, the police said.
