250 line up for solar scheme

March 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 02, 2016 08:06 am IST - Bengaluru:

If all goes to plan, roof-top solar power generation in the city can touch 50MW within a year.

After the announcement of the State’s solar policy in November 2014, Bescom received more than 250 applications from consumers who want to install solar power generation systems on their roofs, said L. Lakshmipathy, Bescom’s nodal officer.

Of these, 150 have been approved while the rest are under process. So far, 11 projects have come up, totalling around 250kW. “If all the 250 applications result in power generation, we can get 100MW into the grid, of which Bengaluru can avail of 50MW,” said Mr. Lakshmipathy.

However, he said there needed to be more awareness about tax exemption for commercial complexes, which would encourage large companies to apply.
