19-year-old student raped, autorickshaw driver arrested

A 19 year-old-girl, a college student, has been raped allegedly by an autorickshaw driver, who has since been arrested.

It is said that the auto driver reportedly convinced the victim to get into his car on the pretext of dropping her home and later took her to an isolated place for three days where he raped her.

Though there were rumours that the auto driver and the girl may have been in a relationship, the family denied any knowledge of it. The Yelahanka police are investigating the case.

Speaking to The Hindu, the girl’s uncle said that she (the complainant) had been living with his sister-in-law as the house was located near her college. “The girl’s father deserted the family when she was about two years old. Her mother and sister live in Doddaballapur district and the girl is staying with her uncle and aunt,” he said.

The girl’s uncle said the family had arranged for the accused to drop her regularly to college in his autorickshaw. The teenager had left her aunt’s house on Thursday evening to meet her mother. However, the accused, who also lived nearby, allegedly approached her in his car and convinced her to go with him on the pretext of dropping her home.

The incident came to light when the girl turned up at her house on Saturday night. “We were all worried that she had not reached home even though she had left the city on Thursday. When we questioned her, she revealed that the accused had taken her to an isolated place where he raped her,” the girl’s uncle said, adding that they filed a complaint with the police on Monday.

The accused was sent for a medical examination, the report of which is awaited. According to the family, the accused, who is married and has two children, allegedly took the girl to his house stating that she had been sent out of her home and needed shelter. “He made her stay at his home at night and took her to isolated places in the morning. She has still not been able to tell us where exactly he took her, but said he dropped her in his car on Saturday evening near Doddaballapur,” the family alleged.
