Over a dozen Ph.D scholars from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) residing in a Bangalore University hostel at the Jnana Bharathi campus were denied breakfast on Friday morning over unpaid dues.

The warden of the hostel, who allegedly snatched their breakfast plates from them, put up a notice stating that 16 students belonging to Category 1 would not be given food as their dues have not been transferred to the university account.

‘Not transferred’

University authorities said the Social Welfare Department had given the students money but it was yet to be deposited to the BU account. But the research scholars claimed that the funds were given to them for other expenses. They are still waiting for the money to cover their food bills.

Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda said until the financial issues were sorted out, the students would be served food after they gave an undertaking stating that they would deposit the money as and when they receive it.
