A 15-year-old boy drowned into a water-filled stone-quarry pit after he went to swim in Avalahalli in Talaghattapura on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Pavan, a student of standard 9.

The Fire and Emergency services officials rushed to the spot and fished out the body after a 45 minute search.

According to the Talaghattapura police, the incident took place around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

“The quarry has not been used for the last few years. It is now filled with water and people use it for washing clothes, swimming and so on. It is somewhat of a tourist destination too, with many youngsters coming from the city for picnic and to swim in the clear water,” police officials said.

Pavan lived in Chunchungatte, and had come with friends. Although he did not know swimming he followed his friends and dived into the water and drowned. However, his friends quickly realised that something was amiss when Pavan did not come up. His friends as well as some localites began searching for him but in vain.

One of them called the police station which then informed the Fire and Emergency services who rushed to the spot.

Pavan’s father, who runs a shop in Gandhi Bazaar rushed to the spot to take the body home.
