A day after a school bus knocked down a security guard, the Transport Department seized 20 school buses found to be operating in unsafe conditions on Wednesday.

This is not the first time that the department has been forced to seize vehicles ferrying schoolchildren, but there is no improvement in the situation, according to Joint Commissioner (Transport) Narendra Holkar.

“We will have to keep checking school buses continuously. These people drive in totally unsafe conditions. They don’t have fitness certificates, insurance or any other documents,” he said. Mr. Holkar said: “We have seized 130 vehicles on Wednesday”.

Earlier in July this year, officials had met with the management of several schools around the city as well as cab driver associations in which it was made clear that the cabs would have to be maintained with valid documents.

Also in July, 20 private buses and 30 maxi cabs ferrying schoolchildren had been detained besides 10 BMTC buses which were also being used for school duty.

These included 20 school buses
