Thirteen people, including three children, were rescued from a brick kiln in Ramanagaram district by the police and a city-based NGO.

According to the police, one person belongs to Mandya district and the rest are from Ramanagaram. The workers, all of whom belong to the Scheduled Tribe, had been working in the brick kiln for the past four years. The kiln, located in Sanjeevayyana Doddi, is owned by Nanjappa, who is absconding.

According to Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, the NGO, the workers were paid below the minimum wage. This is the second successful rescue of bonded labourers from brick kilns in Ramanagaram district.

Esther Daniel, Director of System Reform of IJM, Bangalore, said that all the workers will be sent back to their villages and enrolled in the International Justice Mission’s two-year rehabilitation programme.
