The Electronics City police on Thursday nabbed a gang of 12, including a 20-year-old woman, for allegedly luring motorists on NICE Road and helping her gang members rob them. The kingpin of the gang, Sawan Bablu, 24, has been involved in over 25 such cases, the police said.

Sawan would allegedly ask the woman, identified as Monisha, to stand in an isolated place on NICE Road to lure passers-by under the pretext of soliciting them. She would then lead the unsuspecting victim to the place where the gang members would be waiting. The accused would then assault and rob the men.

After receiving several complaints, a team of police from Electronics City — armed with a description of the perpetrators — kept tab on the locations where the attacks happened. During the course of their investigation, a patrolling team was able to identify Sawan, who fled when they tried to confront him.

He was finally arrested, and confessed to carrying out 25 robberies.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) M.B. Boralingaiah said that Sawan has been booked for multiple criminal cases in and around the city.

Sawan was arrested by the Bannerghatta police for similar cases two years ago. To save himself, he consumed phenol kept in the toilet of the police station and got himself admitted to the hospital. He was later released on bail.

According to the police, Sawan had scored 86% in his PU exam and had even enrolled in college for higher education.

“However his plans were derailed after he began spending time with rowdies. He dropped out of college, and developed alcohol and drug addiction. Apart from robbery, he has cases of extortion and murder pending against him,” a police officer said.
