12 councillors resign from BMPC

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

Twelve councillors have resigned from the Bangalore Metropolitan Planning Committee (BMPC).

They submitted their resignations to the Mayor in the BBMP council meeting on Thursday, complaining that though BMPC was formed nearly seven months ago, not a single meeting has been held.

Civic expert Kathyayini Chamaraj told The Hindu that there seems to be scant respect to decentralisation and empowering local bodies. “Should the High Court intervene and direct the government to call for meetings? As it is, the BMPC has been constituted after nearly 22 years.” The BDA Commissioner, who is BMPC’s member secretary, was unavailable for comment.
