The World Bank has decided to grant a $100 million loan for the Karnataka Urban Water Supply Modernisation Project (KUWSMP) to support the efforts of the Municipal Corporation of Hubballi-Dharwad, the second largest urban centre in the State, to ensure 24 x 7 piped water supply to residents.

The Union government, the State government and the World Bank signed an agreement in New Delhi on Tuesday for the implementation of the project. The project will help bring clean water to one million citizens in the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation limits, including 1,60,000 people living in slums and who depend upon public taps or private vendors for water, according to a release from the World Bank. Earlier, the World Bank helped the State government implement a pilot project in a few wards of the corporation.

“This project will support the State government’s efforts to provide clean water on a continuous basis and scale up the 24 x 7 water service to cover all parts of the twin cities,” said Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. V. Ponnuraj, Managing Director, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation, signed the agreement on behalf of the government.
