April 30, 2011 12:01 pm | Updated 12:01 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

An amalgamation of different dance forms was presented by young artistes at a programme on Friday, organised by The Hindu in association with Shriram Panorama Hills to mark the International Dance Day, at Vaisakhi Kala Vedika in VUDA Park.

Apart from performances by young artistes, renowned Kuchipudi dancer from the city and Sangeetha Nataka Academy awardee Pasumarthy Seetharamaiah was felicitated on the occasion. Internationally acclaimed dancer ‘Kala Ratna' Swathi Somnath was guest of honour while the District Collector J. Syamala Rao was the chief guest.

Pasumarthy Seetharamaiah spoke about his experiences and appreciated the efforts of the organisers for conducting the event.

Swathi Somnath said that there was a need to revive fading dance forms of various states of India. She decried the television dance programmes and urged parents to encourage their children to learn Indian dance forms from an early age. “It is scientifically proven that an individual who has mastery over a dance form also shines in academics. These are intrinsically connected. Indian traditional dances have the elegance and a rhythm that touches the soul, unlike western style of dances that stresses only on the flexibility of the body,” the Kuchipudi dancer said. She applauded the efforts of The Hindu in organising the programme and termed The Hindu as a “newspaper with credibility” that did not “create” news.

The young artistes who performed at the programme were –students of Chandana Dance Academy (Kuchipudi), Nritya Kalabharati (Bharatanatyam), Amiya Ranjan Jena (Odissi), students of St. Anns School, Buchirajupalem (Mohiniattam), Sai Lawrance Dance troupe (modern dance), ten member team from Araku (Dhimsa), and Jalari dance by K. Sai Sampath Kumar, son of ‘Andhra Jalari' D.Y. Sampath Kumar of Vizianagaram.

CEO of Sriram Properties G.V. Ramana Murthy, Regional General Manager, The Hindu (Visakhapatnam), T.V. Suresh and CCO of Shriram Properties Gan Bhukta were present at the function.
