A group of college students and fresh graduates is making its own efforts to protect environment and to create awareness among people about the need to protect environment. The youngsters are taking up activities for the last one year and decided to start Green Youth Brigade (Harita Yuva Vahini) on May 22 to mark the World Biodiversity Day to promote various eco-friendly issues and sensitise public about problems concerning land, water, air, forest, rivers and ocean.
N. Gayatri Himabindu and Y. Uma Swati are doing degree through correspondence and K. Praveen has just completed his B.Tech. P. Vijay is with the Mother Earth Environmental Consciousness Society. Some others like Abhishek and Devi Prasad came together through Facebook as their ideas and concern for the environment was common. “When others are doing something to protect environment, why not we? Then we started our activities and decided to form a body to take up programmes on a larger scale”, the youngsters said on Tuesday.
“We are planning to conduct public surveys on vehicle pollution, impact of urbanisation on public health, climate change. We will coordinate our activities with environmental groups, university professors for making people understand the environmental problems in a better way”, they said.
Organising environmental programmes at schools and colleges to motivate the students for a green climate, preparing short films which will have a better impact are among the programmes the youngsters are planning. They appealed to the students and youths to join in the campaign against pollution and protect environment.
The Green Youth Brigade is conducting a programme on May 19 to highlight the plight of birds and small animals like squirrels which are vanishing from the towns due to urbanisation. Earthen pots would be distributed to people on that day to make them realise the need to provide food to birds and small animals.
