The Vemulapudi bund of Yeleru canal, one of the major sources that supply water to the city breached early Monday. The breach at 80 km of the 156-km canal was 6 m wide.
Superintendent Engineer (Water Supply) V. Chandraiah rushed to the spot and initiated measures for plugging the breach.
Earth moving machines and about 100 workers were pressed into service to prevent wastage of water.
The breach would be plugged sometime at night and water flow stabilised, Mr. Chandraiah said.
The SE said there would be no disruption in water supply on Tuesday.
Any possibility of disruption on Wednesday would be contained. Executive Engineers Srinivas and Assistant Engineers Chakravarti, Immanuel and Steel Plant engineering officials supervised the work.
