The World Meteorological Day was celebrated at the Eastern Naval Command here on Friday.
Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet Rear Admiral Atul K. Jain inaugurated at the Command Met Office an Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Centre (INMAC) Node, which facilitates reception of meteorological data onboard Naval ships at sea.
This was followed by an exhibition on ‘Meteorology and oceanography’, showcasing various modern meteorological instruments and informative charts related to recent storms over the East Coast, underlining the growing importance of weather-watching in day-to-day lives in order to ensure safety of life and property during natural calamities.
A number of activities such as competitions in painting and essay-writing for children and organised visits by schools to the Command Meteorological facilities were conducted on the occasion.
The day is observed every year to commemorate the formation of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 1950. Each year, the WMO focuses on a meteorological issue of global significance to human progress, sustainable socio-economic development, and environment protection.
The theme for the current year is ‘Weather and Climate - Engaging the Youth’.
