“India is among the top five countries in the world to take up TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language),” said Assessment Specialist from the US-based Educational Testing Service (ETS), the institution that conducts TOEFL across the globe, Phal Vaughter, during an interaction with The Hindu here on Monday.
In tune with that development, ETS will conduct a one-day workshop for teachers and academic counsellors who handle the course for TOEFL, at Hotel Park on Tuesday.
She said that the workshop would help better the skills of the teachers and the counsellors, and also inform them about the latest developments. There are 8,000 institutions in the world that accept TOEFL score for admission.
Ms. Vaughter said that the students from India had been consistently performing impressively in the examination. “In TOEFL, we have four sections — reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In a band score of 30 for each section, students from India tick 23 on an average,” she said. The TOEFL Propell Teachers Training Workshops are being conducted for the second year in a row.
This year, the workshop is being held in four cities — Mumbai, Bangalore, Visakhapatnam, and New Delhi.
Scholarship
She also informed that TOEFL would be extending nine scholarships for Indian students for the second year on the trot. “Depending on the TOEFL score and high academic achievements, scholarship worth 10,000 USD will be given to each of the top three students for study in the U.S., the U.K. or Canada. The next six students will get 5,000 USD each as scholarship money. Details can be had at www.ets.org,” she said.
This year, the scholarships will be awarded to the nine students by the COO of ETS Walt Mac Donald at a function in Mumbai on July 7.
Ms. Vaughter said that from this year, ETS introduced a TOEFL India Call Centre bearing number 000-800-100-3780. Students can call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the calls will be answered by an Indian representative.
