Women are mentally stronger compared to men. They can play different roles in day-to-day life at ease. But one should not get carried away with one’s position at work. Clarity in thinking helps one serve society better, III Metropolitan Magistrate G. Sunitha said.
Addressing ‘Mahila Chattala Nyaya Vignana Sadassu’ organised by Prabha Charitable Trust here on Saturday, she stressed on the need to create harmonious life between genders. She also explained how women can approach a police station and courts and file a case under Section 498 A IPC to protect themselves against domestic violence on different grounds. She also spoke about gender equality and legal aspects of ‘pious obligation’ of daughters.
Though we have been adequately protected and assured by laws against violence and abuse, in many subtle ways women are still being viewed as weaker sex, lamented Deputy Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise B. Sumidha Devi. “It is also pathetic to note that young girls are falling prey to puppy love neglecting their education and parents. They are misplacing their trust. But the real dignity can be earned only when one concentrates on studies and makes a mark serving society. The dignity with which you work will earn you respect,” she explained.
Superintendent of Police Visakhapatnam (Rural) G. Srinivas said: “Women do a lot of selfless service to family and society. Do not tolerate violence silently. Rise to the situation and approach proper channels to guard your rights against any form of violence.”
District programme officer of NSS Bhagya Lakshmi underlined the need to think positively and lead life in an amicable manner. “The fight is against social issues but not between men and women. A healthy society needs both the genders and the love they share should be constructive towards each other,” she asserted.
President of Visakhapatnam Bar Assocaition Karri Adi Babu assured that his association would extend its support to any woman who approached them.
Explaining about the objective of the meet, managing trustee of Prabha Charitable Trust Prabha said women should not be ignorant of the laws. She said that one should know proper channels to approach when women are confronted with different forms of violence.
Women from DWCRA SHGs and students interacted with inspector of police Bangaru Papa on various issues on eve-teasing, systems to approach during domestic violence and issues related to sensitisation. She told the students to contact 100 and 1091 and seek help at the nearest police stations.
