A new people-friendly initiative of the City Police to bridge the gap between the public and the police, was launched by Police Commissioner B. Shivadhar Reddy at Old Gajuwaka on Thursday.
A ‘Public complaint box’, the brainchild of Gajuwaka Inspector Ch. Vivekananda, was intended to bring the citizens closer to the police and thereby reduce crime through a hassle-free information system.
Commending Mr. Vivekananda for the initiative, Mr. Shivadhar Reddy appealed to the public to make use of the complaint box and benefit from it. He also interacted with the students of Chalapathi Public School and enlightened them on the evils of eve-teasing and ragging. He said that the new initiative would be extended to other parts of the city based on the success of the programme.
The common feeling among the people was that visiting a police station was an embarrassment as it could be construed wrongly by others. Many people have good ideas for better policing and information about crime and criminals and do not visit the police station for this reason. Women also do not dare to visit the police stations for the same reason.
The public complaint boxes would enable them to give their complaints and suggestions without any embarrassment of visiting a police station. Information about gangsters, drug peddlers, eve teasers, prostitution and any other crime in the locality could be written and put in the box. The public can also use the facility to complain against erring the police personnel.
Assistant Commissioner of Police K.V. Ramana, Inspector Vivekananda, local leaders and students and the general public participated in the programme.
