The Government needs to put into action what it has been talking on environment protection, according to North Andhra Graduates Constituency MLC M.V.S. Sarma.
Speaking on return from 32-day 2000-km cycle yatra organised by the Jana Vignana Vedika covering 90 mandals in the three districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Viskhapatnam, the MLC said that the common people were aware of the issues of environment and it was up to the government to honour its commitment to environment by pushing forward sustainable and holistic development processes.
The interaction with the people throughout his 32-day yatra made him realise that the ordinary man was incapable of doing anything on the scale that would damage the environment. “It is the capitalist who snatches away the livelihood of the poor farmer by taking the land for setting up industries. He is the biggest polluter. These capitalists in a bid to cut cost select technologies that are polluting and dump the effluents without spending money on its treatment,” the MLC said. Why did the government cancel the Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanti project which would have irrigated seven lakh acres and provided sustainable livelihood to millions of poor farmers and would have protected the greenery, he asked questioning the policy priorities of the political leadership.
Felicitated Former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University K.V. Ramana and a host of other JVV activists were present on the occasion. They felicitated the team that accompanied the MLC on his gruelling field tour.
