The sudden drop in the mercury levels across the coastal areas on Monday came as a welcome relief to the people after the heat wave conditions in Visakhapatnam during the past few days. Some coastal areas received showers during the last 24 hours ending on Monday morning.
The rain was attributed to the trough, which extended from Uttar Pradesh to South Tamil Nadu across coastal Andhra Pradesh. The trough turned feeble on Monday but the cloud patch over the Bay of Bengal contributed to the drop in temperatures.
The maximum temperature recorded at Visakhapatnam Airport on Monday was 39.6 degree Celsius and 38 degree C at Waltair. It was a drop of about 5 degree C from Sunday and 7 degree C drop from Saturday at Vizag Airport, according to a spokesman of the Cyclone Warning Centre The maximum temperatures recorded on Monday are: Kalingapatnam – 35.5, Tuni – 33.3, Kakinada – 32.3, Gannavaram – 33.4, Narsapur – 32.6, Bapatla – 32, Ongole – 39.6, Kavali – 43.4, Nellore – 38.3, and Tirupati – 38.4.
The chief amounts of rainfall received during the last 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. on Monday are: Chintapalli – 4 cm, Prattipadu – 3 cm, Palakonda, Sattenapalli and Tuni – 2 cm, Elamanchili, Peddapuram and Bapatla – 1 each.
Strong surface winds from a westerly direction with speed reaching 45 to 50 kmph are likely along and off south coastal AP and strong surface winds from north westerly direction with speeds reaching 45 to 50 kmph are likely along and off north coastal AP during the next 24 hours starting from 5:30 p.m. on Monday, according to Duty Officer of the CWC GSLN Murthy.
