Noted physician Kootikuppala Surya Rao presented a paper on ‘Challenges in preventing H1N1 (swine flu) in India at the 6th International Conference on Hands-on Science on the theme: Science for All: Quest for Excellence being organised in Ahmedabad, from October 27 to 31.

In his abstract, Dr. Surya Rao spoke about the genesis of the new influenza virus that was first detected in the US in April this year.

Contagious

The flu is contagious that spread from one person to another through tiny droplets that are released into the air when a person sneezes.

One should cover the nose and mouth with tissue when coughing and sneezing.

New strategies

The tissue should be thrown in trash after use. One should wash hands with soap and water and avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth.

Dr. Surya Rao called for new strategies to effectively control H1N1 flu in India as ignorance and complacency were posing a challenge to the effective implementation of the preventive measures.
