Another major chess tournament will be held in the city and the organisers are making efforts to give much publicity to the tournament to attract more players and spectators to it.
The All Vizag Chess Association, under the auspices of the AP Chess Association and the All India Chess Federation, is organising the Vizag GM international open tournament from October 25 to November 4, in which some top players are expected to participate.
The tournament will provide an opportunity for the local players and sports lovers to witness good quality chess. In addition to that, the organising committee has decided to present an opportunity for the unrated players from different categories to compete with the GMs and other top players, according to K.V.S. Sarma and P.V. Vijaya Bhaskar Kumar of the organising committee.
It is holding a series of tournaments for different sections of players and the winner of each category will be given an entry to the GMs tournament.
Schedule
The following is the schedule of the tournaments:
For professionals, doctors, engineers, media, advocates, builders and others — October 16; for employees of Central and State governments, banks, insurance companies and private sector organisations — October 17; for women — October 18; for college and university students — October 21 (all at port indoor stadium); for pupils of Government and GVMC schools — October 19, and for pupils of private schools — October 20 (at the Swarna Bharati indoor stadium).
The association has also decided to distribute copies of a book containing basics of chess to pupils of GVMC and government schools. Playing and following chess will help improve the intellect of a student and this was is reason for distributing the book, they said. CDs of the book would be distributed to the private schools.
Earlier, Government Whip Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao inaugurated the organising committee’s room at the port stadium and released the schedule of the promotional tournaments.
He and MD of CMR group M.V. Ramana hoped the tournament would provide good quality chess.
In charge of SAI’s STC T. Kishor Kumar, former Olympian M.V. Manikayalu, and Dronacharya awardee I. Venkateswara Rao participated.
