Valentine’s Day celebrated on February 14 has become popular as a day to celebrate love not only among young couples but also among couples whose relationship has stood the test of time.

Coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, parks, and Beach Road over the years have been choc-a-block with people celebrating their special bond on the day.

The Valentine’s Day spirit has now extended over a week with days like Rose Day, Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Bear Day, Kiss Day and Hug Day adding to the celebration. Cashing in on the trend, gift shops in the city are filled to the brim with personalised gifts, stuffed toys, imitation jewellery, heart shaped pillows and cards.

Florists are working overtime to meet the demand for roses. A florist on Sampath Vinayaka Temple Road says he has received orders in advance as the price of roses on February 14 will be almost double.

For those who are away from their loved ones, Ferns and Petals that has a presence across the country and abroad has its website decked up for the occasion with special offers, gifts, romantic ideas and innovative bouquets that can be delivered to the doorstep. Travel websites like makemytrip.com are offering specially packaged romantic getaways starting from Rs. 2999.

Shops have dedicated sections to cater to those looking for gifts to express their love. From talking teddies to magical pearls the choice is endless. At Darlings Paradise if you shop for over Rs. 500 you can get your photo clicked with your loved one in a beautifully decorated photo booth that will be delivered to you in a photo frame decorated with hearts.

Hotels are also planning to have special offers for couples. Unfortunately this year as February 14 is a very auspicious day for weddings, there is a huge demand for function halls because of which some of the big hotels are unable to host Valentines Day parties.

With all the ostentatious display of love and affection it is going to be very tough to sneak away for a romantic candlelight dinner with a live band playing romantic numbers. So whatever it is you plan to do that day do plan ahead unless you want to be standing all dressed up waiting for a table outside a restaurant or lounge.
