The draft City Development Plan of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has been drawn up with an estimated outlay of Rs. 6,024 crore, Commissioner GVMC M. V. Satyanarayana said.
The draft plan is likely to be finalised by June-end after consultations with people’s representatives, officials and other stakeholders, he told mediapersons in his chambers here on Friday.
‘Carefully done’
The CDP has been drawn taking into consideration the inputs from stakeholders after the first draft was rejected by people’s representatives.
The plan has been drawn up for works to be taken up in the next seven years and is expected to meet the demands of the estimated population of the city in the year 2035, he explained.
‘Not a fixed plan’
The CDP is not a fixed plan but would have to be revised taking into consideration the changing scenarios and demographics, he added.
The major component of the draft CDP’s Rs. 6,024 crore has been taken up by the plan for 24-hour water supply to be completed with an estimated Rs, 2,184 crore (36 per cent) and the estimate for housing for urban poor accounts for Rs. 1,500 crore (25 per cent), he said.
Of the estimated Rs. 6,024 crore more than Rs. 4,000 crore projects are being taken up under Centrally funded schemes and Public Private Partnership (PPP) which means that the civic body has to mobilise the 30 per cent contribution for only Rs. 2,000 crore.
‘Under-assessed’
Most of the properties in the city are under-assessed and rationalisation of property tax and revenue from user charges for new water and sewerage connections would improve the coffers of the civic body, he explained on the revenue mobilisation.
JNNURM projects
The civic body would not have to add to the burden of the tax paying citizens, he added. The ongoing projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) are to be completed by March-end 2014.
