The Eastern Naval Command is all set to celebrate the Navy Day on December 4, marking the day Indian Navy Missile Boats carried out a deadly attack on Karachi Harbour in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Three events
Three functions are scheduled on Wednesday to commemorate the event.
It would begin with Wreath Laying Ceremony at the War Memorial on the RK Beach by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra.
This would be followed by an Operational Display to be held in the evening, showcasing the capability and versatility of Naval ships, submarines, aircraft, and the Special Forces.
Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan will be the chief guest on the occasion. People of the city can view from RK Beach, the manoeuvres by Destroyers, Corvettes, fast attack craft and Landing Ships, beach assault by Marine Commandos, Sky Diving, close range anti-aircraft firing, band performance, formation anchoring, and a host of other exercises. A total of 17 ships, 13 aircraft, and a submarine are scheduled to take part in this year’s demonstration.
At Home
The Operational Display would be followed by an ‘At Home’ to be held for invitees at the Navy House, the residence of Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra.
Full dress rehearsals for the Operational Display will be held on Monday and the final demonstration is scheduled on Wednesday.
Appeal to public
During the rehearsals and on the final day, a number of aircraft would be flying over the RK Beach. Birds flying near the display area pose a major threat to the aircraft. In order to ensure smooth conduct of the display and for air safety, it is requested that the viewing public as well as residents of the neighbourhood keep the beach area litter-free and avoid bringing to the beach or dropping food items and garbage in the open, as these attract birds, Naval authorities said in a statement issued here.
