The city police launched a poster to help curb eve-teasing on the occasion of International Women’s Day at Police Conference Hall in the city on Friday.

The city police have advised colleges to install CC cameras at vulnerable areas on the college campus to help curb eve-teasing and create safer zones for girls.

The initiative of Police Commissioner B. Shivadhar Reddy was explained to nodal officers from different colleges in the city at a meeting on the International Women’s Day.

The police promised to liaise with the nodal officers of various educational institutions and also exercise close vigilance by personnel in mufti.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shivadhar Reddy said the idea was not to punish the young students who indulged in eve teasing. “Since they have a future, we would counsel them and warn them. If they still continue, we will take action against them. Our personnel in mufti will be monitoring areas where there are reports of eve-teasing,” he said. He also deputed a woman inspector from the Special Branch as nodal officer as the point of contact (apart from SHOs) to help coordinate with the college heads and nodal officers of the educational institutions.

Hundreds of nodal officers from degree, professional, junior, private, and corporate colleges said bus stops and parks near Steel Plant, Rajendra Nagar, and other areas should be monitored closely. “In most of these places frequented by students there have been reports of eve teasing and indecent behaviour,” they said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) P. Viswa Prasad said nodal officers should stay in touch with station house officers (SHOs) and discuss the cases of eve-teasing and sexual harassment on the campus.

“This would help the police take action. Teachers and parents should also keep a watchful eye on their wards and sensitise them on gender equality.”

As part of the campaign, a poster was launched by the police to help curb eve-teasing. Additional DCP (Admin) B. Atchuta Rao said that the police had already installed CC cameras at bus stops near Gajuwaka and that more such cameras were proposed in future.
