In a bid to make vegetables affordable to the salaried and lower middle classes, the government has launched a scheme of supplying a few vegetables at a subsidised rate.
The scheme was launched here on Friday by Infrastructure, Investment and Ports Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao at MVP Colony Rythu Bazaar.
Under the scheme, 1 kg each of potatoes, onions and tomatoes, half kg each of brinjals and ivy gourds (dondakaya), quarter kg of green chillies, two bundles of leafy vegetables, and one bundle of coriander leaves were given at Rs. 99. “The actual cost of the packet is Rs. 112,” the Minister explained.
A number of buyers lined up at the counter even before the sale was formally launched by the Minister.
The scheme would be operated for two weeks, the Minister said. If the prices of vegetables did not come down by then, the scheme would be continued for some more time, he added. The scheme has already been launched in Hyderabad and will be implemented in other parts of the State.
