The Visakhapatnam Cricket Club, one of the oldest clubs and directly affiliated to the ACA, felicitated one of its veteran players D.N. Sinha during its annual general body meeting here on Sunday.
President of VDCA and chief patron of the club D.V. Subba Rao felicitated Mr. Sinha. Mr. Sinha, 77, while replying to the felicitations, recalled the days when cricket was played on cement pitches at the Port Gymkhana ground and the Police Barracks. G.S.N. Rao (Ayya), former Assistant Secretary in the Port Trust, played pivotal role in shaping the destinies of several local players.
President of VCC and veteran sports journalist A. Prasanna Kumar said that his association with Mr. Sinha dated back to 1954 when cricket was also played in the backyard of Mr. Sinha's house. Office-bearers of the VCC and its members graced the occasion.
Club secretary P.R. Narayanaswami said that VCC was the oldest cricket club in city, which was affiliated to both the ACA and the VDCA. Several VCC players had the distinction of representing the State and the AU in the inter-State and inter-university tournaments in the past few decades. S.K.A. Hussain, who was member of the South Zone universities' team that won the Vizzy Trophy held at Varanasi in 1991, former Andhra Ranji captain Amit Pathak and wicketkeeper R. Vivekanand were among its players. Hussain was present at the ceremony. VCC joint secretary N. Suwacha Raj proposed a vote of thanks.
Election of office-bearers of the club was held during the meeting and the following were elected unanimously for a three-year term:
President: Prof. Prasanna Kumar; vice-presidents: B. Mallikharjuna Rao, N. Subramanyam, D.V.S.S. Somayajulu and R. Vijay Kumar; secretary: P.R. Narayanaswami; joint secretary: N. Suwacha Raj and treasurer: G. Sankar Rao.
